Introducing an international Master’s programme focusing on maritime technologies.
Sustainable Maritime Engineering is a unique Master’s programme dedicated to ocean sustainability – from the surface to the deep sea. Hands-on projects in Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, or Underwater Technologies, combined with close collaboration with the industry, are designed to prepare scholars for shaping the future of the global maritime sector. The programme is offered by the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Marine Technologies at the University of Rostock, starting in October 2025.
This Master’s programme offers three specialised pathways:
- Naval Architecture with a focus on innovative and sustainable ship design;
- Ocean Engineering for offshore infrastructure, renewable marine energy, and sustainable ocean use;
- Underwater Technologies with an exploration of marine research technology and a variety of underwater systems.
The combination of hands-on projects, access to state-of-the-art campus laboratories, direct industry partnerships, and collaborations with renowned research institutes will provide students in this programme with dynamic practical experience and excellent global career prospects.
A key strength of this programme is academic flexibility. Students are encouraged to shape their own path and focus on areas that are most important to them. Additional features include integrated, subject-specific language courses in German and English as well as the opportunity to spend a semester abroad.
All courses, including examinations, are conducted in English. For oral examinations, German is also a possibility.
The University of Rostock, a German public university, does not charge tuition. However, a small semester fee (around €300) is charged for covering administrative costs. The fee also includes a public transit ticket and access to many student services.
Sustainable Maritime Engineering paves the way for students to shape the future of marine sustainability, spanning from the ocean’s surface to its deepest depths. It unlocks excellent career opportunities in the maritime industry, in university and non-university research institutions, and in the public sector worldwide.
The application period for the winter semester 2025/2026 is open from April 1st 2025 to May 31st 2025: www.sme-germany.com
