EU-CONEXUS Poetry contest

Introduction
EU-CONEXUS is inviting you to participate in its poetry contest on a “Sense of Place”.
“Sense of Place” refers to the emotional attachment and meaning people associate with a particular location, shaped by personal experiences and cultural significance.
What does a sense of place mean to you? Do you have an emotional connection or bond to a specific place, area or location? Perhaps it’s a particular community, activity or even a special time of year. We often feel like we belong to a feeling, a place or a community and in EU-CONEXUS poetry contest, we would like you to feel and express it in your own way.
Take the opportunity to describe a place that is special and unique to you, how you perceive and experience it.

Eligibility to EU-CONEXUS Poetry Contest
- The Poetry Contest is open to all EU-CONEXUS community (students of all cycles, researchers, academic and non academic staff)
- To ensure fairness and give everyone an equal opportunity, each participant is allowed to submit only one poem.
Poetry Contest Rules
- The topic of EU-CONEXUS Poetry Contest is the “Sense of Place”
- Participants can use whatever poetic styles they prefer
- There are no restrictions on the number of lines a poem should have
- Participants are free to submit an untitled poem or a poem with a title
- The poem in its entirety must be an original work by the participant to the contest (no plagiarized and no assistance of A.I.)
- All poems must be written in Arial 11 with single line spacing
- All poems must be submitted in a Word document
- Participants can write their poems in one of the nine (9) native languages of EU-CONEXUS:
- English
- Croatian
- French
- German
- Greek
- Irish
- Lithuanian
- Romanian
- Spanish
For non-English languages, poems must be accompanied by an author-sanctioned translation into English. This is to ensure that a global audience can appreciate all submitted poems.
- Changes cannot be made to entries after they have been submitted;
- All entries will be judged anonymously and the participant’s name must not appear on the poem itself. However, participant must give their real name as part of their submission.
Selection criteria
Every poem will be rated according to the following criteria. A maximum of 10 points per criteria will be attributed.
- Originality: novelty of ideas, exploration of the theme from an original perspective, creativity.
- Overall impact, depth of content and relevance to the theme: general impression and impact of the poem, poem alignment with the contest theme, depth of thought, use of imagery and symbolism, general harmony of the poem (content, style, form, rhythm, etc.).
- Stylistic mastery and musicality, rhythm: richness of language, use of metaphors and symbols, form of the poem, rhythm, musicality of sound.
- Emotional impact: conveying emotions or mood, general emotional power of the poem encouraging the reader to feel or empathize with the emotions being expressed.
- Technical precision: grammar and punctuation, structural consistency.
Selection procedure: 2 steps
First step: Selection at national level
Nine (9) local juries at each of the nine EU-CONEXUS university partners will be set up.
Each of these nine (9) local juries will select among all poems received in the native language of the country and based on the above criteria, one (1) standout poem.
Nine (9) poems in the nine (9) different languages of EU-CONEXUS Alliance will therefore be shortlisted.
Second step: Selection at EU-CONEXUS level
Out of the nine (9) poems shortlisted, EU-CONEXUS jury composed of EU-CONEXUS WP17 representatives « Community engagement through arts and culture » will determine the first, second and third prize winners based on the number of points each poem gained at the first national selection.
The first three poems that gather the maximum of points will be the three winners.
Prizes
The best three poems will be awarded a 250 euros prize each.
The prizes may not be received in any form other than those provided for in these rules. The prizes awarded by EU-CONEXUS may not be contested, exchanged for another prize or for their cash value, replaced, resold, transferred or reimbursed in whole or in part.
It is hereby specified that EU-CONEXUS declines all responsibility for any incidents and/or damages of any kind that may arise from the enjoyment of the prizes awarded and/or from their use. It is recalled that EU-CONEXUS will not provide any guarantee or assistance services, as the prizes consist solely of the delivery of the prizes as described above.
Submission deadline
The submission deadline for the Poetry contest is Tuesday 31st December 2024 at midnight (Brussels time).
Local selection by EU-CONEXUS national jurys will be held over the first two weeks of January 2025.
Selection at EU-CONEXUS level of the top three winning poems will be made on Wednesday 22nd January 2025.
The results of the Poetry Contest will be officially announced by e-mail to the winners at the email address provided during entry, on Thursday 23rd January 2025.
Data Protection (GDPR)
The information provided by the candidates may be used for data processing, excluding commercial or political use.
Candidates benefit from the right to access, rectify and remove data about themselves by making a formal request to the Organizer of the Poetry Contest. Candidates may request to be omitted or removed from the Poetry Contest before the closing date of the submission.
Intellectual property rights
Each candidate to the Poetry Contest certifies that he or she is the sole copyright-holder of the submitted poem and it is original to him/her. The candidate has full power to authorize the use of the poem.
Each candidate to the Poetry Contest certifies that all submitted poems do not violate or infringe on any existing copyright or any other third-party rights and contain nothing otherwise unlawful.
The candidates grants for free to EU-CONEXUS the worldwide non-exclusive right for the whole term of copyright, to use, edit, alter, copy, exhibit, reproduce, adapt, publish or distribute and redistribute the poems in full or part for purposes of publicizing EU-CONEXUS programmes or for any other lawful purpose and communicate to the public, worldwide, in any language in printed and electronic format, the whole or any part of the submitted poems.
The candidates waive the right to inspect or approve any finished products, whether in written or electronic form. The candidates waive any right to royalties, payment or other consideration arising from or related to the use of their poem.
