Data analysis in physical oceanography

This Research Student Hub aims to provide basic methods used for analyzing and displaying a variety of oceanographic data using the open-source software Ocean Data View. Using In-situ data gathered by CTD and managing existing oceanographic databases, by means of different
types of plots it will be inferred the distribution of the physical properties in the ocean (profiles, sections, T-S diagrams). An introduction to geostrophic flows calculation using temperature and density profiles will also be explored.
General learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be able to:
- Create an oceanographic database using the given software and the data collected during an oceanographic cruise.
- Analyze physical properties such as temperature, salinity, and density using profiles, sections, and T-S diagrams.
- Calculate geostrophic flows based on the dynamic method (thermal wind equations).
- Analyze and interpret experimental data.
- Develop skills in teamwork, independent work, and working in a multidisciplinary environment.
