Extract preparation, Biochemical Characterization, and In Vitro Testing of Extracts
Ecosystems serve as rich repositories of biodiversity, hosting diverse species and fostering genetic abundance. These environments also yield valuable metabolites with potential applications in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and various other industries. Activities carried out during this SRH research project will involve preparing extracts and conducting detailed biochemical characterization. We will assess total phenolic content via the Folin-Ciocalteu assay, measure flavonoid content by using the aluminum chloride method, and estimate chlorophylls a and b, as well as total carotenoids concentration, spectrophotometrically. Extracts’ antioxidant activity will be evaluated through two widely recognized assays: TEAC and FRAP. Additionally, in vitro experiments on human cell lines will explore the cytocompatibility of the produced extracts and determine a safe concentration range for usage. The well-established MTT assay will be utilized in vitro cytotoxicity assessments, encompassing a broad range of extract concentrations and varied incubation durations. Focusing on biochemical characterization and in vitro testing will allow to unveil a variety of potential applications of ecosystem-derived extracts.
